ALEXANDER NEVSKI MEMORIAL CHURCH
Alexander Nevski Memorial Churchis the finest piece of architecture on the Balkans. Completed in 1912 in honor of the Russian casualties of the 1877-78 War of Liberation from Ottoman Rule the church possesses a superb collection of icons - the best in Bulgaria. Craftsmen and artists from 6 countries worked on the five-aisle church for over 30 years to create all these real masterpieces of icons, frescoes, murals and huge chandeliers. Egyptian alabaster, Brazilian onyx, gold and mosaics embody the spirit of the finest Eastern Orthodox traditions.

ST. GEORGE'S ROTUNDA
St. George's Rotonda(4th century) is one of the oldest architectural monuments in the capital with stylish symmetrical silhouette and original frescoes dated between the 5th and 14th century. The frieze on the dome depicts 22 Prophets, over 2 meters high. Neighboring are remnants of a Roman street with public buildings.

ST. SOFIA CHURCH
St. Sofia ChurchThe 4th-6th century basilica was built during the reign of Justinian. Two layers of frescoes and mosaics depicting trees, flowers and birds have been recovered. A legend says that a princess by the name of Sofia was buried in the church and the city is named after her. Nearby is the grave of the national poet and writer Ivan Vazov, marked by an engraved boulder.

CHURCH OF ST. NEDELYA
Church of St. NedelyaBuilt in the middle of the 19th century, it is known as the Church of the Blessed Sveti Kral. The current building was reconstructed after 1925 when it was almost completely destroyed after a bomb explosion.

SOFIA UNIVERSITY
Sofia Universityis the most prestigious university in Bulgaria. It was built a decade after Sofia became Bulgaria's capital in 1879 with funds bequeathed by the brothers Evlogi and Christo Georgiev.

 

ST. NIKOLAI RUSSIAN CHURCH
St. Nikolai Russian ChurchBuilt in 1913 on the project of a Russian architect, this church preserves the style of Moscow decorative arts and painting. Four smaller domes surround the high dome. The roof of the church is covered with green majolica tiles, which harmonize perfectly with the gold-plated domes. The external decoration of the Russian church is a joy to behold with its exquisite and rich colors. The frescoes were painted in the style of Novgorod icon school.

THE NATIONAL PALACE OF CULTURE
The National Palace of Cultureis the biggest Congress Center on the Balkans. It is located in the center of the city with a fascinating view to Vitosha Mountain.


BOYANA CHURCH
Boyana Churchwith its wonderful frescoes from the 13th century is situated at the foot of Vitosha Mountain. Painted by a Bulgarian artist, the portraits of Sebastocrator Kaloyan and his wife Desislava are claimed to be among the oldest and most interesting examples of East European Medieval art. BOYANA CHURCH has been listed by UNESCO as a part of the world s cultural heritage.

NATIONAL HISTORY MUSEUM
the museum covers the whole period from prehistory to the present day. The ground floor houses relics from the earliest period up to the Middle Ages and includes gold and silver treasures (the Panagyurishte treasure), ceramics and archaeological remains. The first floor concentrates on ecclesiastical art, the 19th century Bulgarian National Revival including folk costumes, carpets and typically furnished rooms from that period.

VITOSHA MOUNTAIN
Vitosha Mountainhas become very much a part of Sofia owing to its accessibility by means of the cabin lifts at Knyazhevo and Simeonovo. Cherni Vrah, the highest point, gives wonderful views over the whole region. The winter ski-resort Aleko lies at 1868 m and the ski season lasts from early December until late spring. The beautiful scenery makes the whole area attractive during all seasons of the year.
